The Liberty Trail Tour Guide App is available
We are pleased to share with you that The Liberty Trail tour guide app is now broadly available for free download online and through the Apple App store and Google Play. We hope you’ll enjoy South Carolina’s scenic byways and experience an array of rich Revolutionary War historical sites through this virtual tour guide, filled with battle illustrations, modern day site photography, virtual tours, and driving directions.
The Liberty Trail tour guide app connects 30 National Park Service, South Carolina State Parks, and local sites with a series of new battlefield parks being developed through The Liberty Trail partnership. This includes the Waxhaw's, aka. Buford's Massacre. Please check it out and read or listen to the seven stories about our battlefield.
June 27, 2024 The South Carolina Battleground Preservation Trust and The American Battlefield Trust have added five kiosks at the Battleground as part of the Liberty Trail, a driving trail of Revolutionary War battlefields in South Carolina. The kiosks are located just to the south of the circle drive and include the following subjects: An Ill Fated Retreat, The Chase is On, A Demand for Surrender, Defeat at Waxhaws and Wagons and Wounded. An audio presentation for each kiosk is available by using your phone to scan a QR code located on the kiosk. A mowed trail connects the kiosks. Please take the opportunity to visit the Battlefield and experience these new interpretive kiosks.
6/13/2024 On Saturday May 25th, the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) unveiled a new marker at the Battlefield to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. This is part of the DAR's America 250 Patriots Marker project which has already placed 17 markers in South Carolina. Unveiling was done by DAR Regents Gina Bobo and Bonnibel Moffat.
June 12, 2024 This past winter major improvements were made to the Battlefield with the addition of a brick paver walkway between the patio by the flag poles and the walkway in front of the memorials. The walkway crosses the gravel circle drive and does a great job of unifying the elements of the memorial. In addition, two brick paver walks radiate out from the main walkway and provide access to 4 new kiosks. The new kiosk subjects include: Significant Events in the Life of the Battlefield Why we fly the Virginia Flag Commanders Combatants (We highlight 6 combatants, all Americans but two were Loyalists and 4 were Patriots) Please take the time to come to the Battlefield and enjoy these new additions.
At the June meeting of the Lancaster County Council the Friends of the Buford Massacre Battlefield were approved for an award of $15,000. The monies are provided through the Accommodation Tax Grant that are administered by Lancaster County. The grant will be used to pay for additional brick paver walkways and informational kiosks at the Buford Battlefield. When completed the walkways will provide handicap access to the grounds. The kiosks will enrich the story of the men who fought at the battle including the commanders, Colonel Abraham Buford and Lt Col. Banastre Tarleton, and the common soldiers who fought in the battle.

The South Carolina Battleground Preservation Trust (SCBPT) is developing walking trails on the 51 acres of the battlefield they have preserved around the original 2 acre county park. These mowed grass trails can be easily followed as they wind through the fields and fence lines but caution is required as there are several rough and rutted areas. Tree lines have been followed, for shade, where possible. Please feel free to use these walking trails for your recreation, but be aware that there are no trail markings, they will be added in the future. But you may use the following map as your guide. The South Carolina Battleground Preservation Trust and the American Battlefield Trust have joined forces to purchase 51 acres of the Battlefield that surround the original two-acre Lancaster County Park. This action was motivated by two events: the 250th anniversary of the Revolutionary War, and recognition by the ABT that the battles in South Carolina were critical to winning the War. In addition, the SCBPT plans to create a driving Liberty Trail to tie the accounts of the many South Carolina battlefield sites together and increase tourism in the State. The added 51 acres have been placed in a conservation easement with the Katawba Valley Land Trust (KVLT). The goal of the ABT, SCBPT and the Friends organization is to amplify and improve the interpretation of the battle fought here and clarify its relevance to other battles fought in South Carolina by making the battlefield an outdoor classroom. Added ground signage and technology, including a mobile tour will be implemented. And walking trails will be developed to increase the recreation amenities of the battlefield.
